CHANNELLED Memories
This work is an extension of a piece originally made in 2021. It is made up of repurposed stripped ethernet cable, which has been released from its outer plastic casing. Behind the concept is the echoing of traditional craft methods brought into the present using contemporary materials. Because ethernet cables are a connection method for the internet, they enable communication. In this case, I have utilised this as a metaphor for transitioning time and place. The fact that the ‘blanket’ in this form is not nurturing or malleable equates to strong psychological memories.
My first memory of being taught crochet, particularly “granny squares”, was at 8, seated on the floor in my aunt’s house. Of my five paternal aunts, she guided me in many female pursuits designed to keep a lively “tomboy” contained and calm in a suitable domestic task
By using these materials, I have sought to disrupt the canon. It’s hanging also enacts the desire to break free from traditional cultural norms to produce a piece that is full of movement and potential while being restrained in its place.
